On-Demand Access

A control board packaging solution designed for on-track firmware modifications

— PROJECT NAME

Low Voltage Trunk

— ROLE

Designer

— APPLICATION

CMR "23e" FSAE EV Racecar

The Low Voltage Trunk is an external enclosure located on the rear of Carnegie Mellon Racing’s 2023 racecar, housing all low voltage control boards. This enclosure protects the internal electronics from debris and water ingress, but more importantly allows for quick access and sealing of the boards for on-the-go tweaks to the onboard firmware of the various boards in an easy-to-access location.

This iteration of the Low Voltage Trunk improved many things from previous years. Most notably, the mass was reduced by almost 50%, and clearance to nearby suspension components was improved for better serviceability and manufacturing tolerance.
